Do Not Disturb! Haunted Hotels in Arizona

Another Halloween is approaching and what a better way to celebrate than to stay in a haunted hotel!  If you live or are visiting Arizona over this Pagan holiday, there are plenty of opportunities to find yourself a ghost, Zoiks Scoob!  So get your digital voice recorders, EMF detectors, night vision cameras and an extra pair of underwear ready for some ghost hunting.

San Carlos Hotel

The first place most Arizona visitors go is to Phoenix - the capital and 5th biggest city in the US. Be sure to stay the night at the San Carlos Hotel where modern day and ancient spirits are said to make themselves known.  The hotel has been in continuous operation since 1928 and less than 2 months after the hotel opened, the Arizona Republican (now the Arizona Republic - or "Repulsive" depending on the day), 22 year old Leone Jenson jumped to her death.  It was rumored that Jenson was abused by her boyfriend and/or he was having an affair with another woman.   While most evidence does point to suicide, some speculate that she may have been murdered by her boyfriend or the other woman.   Her ghost appears as a white, cloudy figure accompanied by an eerie moaning noise. Mwuhahahaha!

Hotel Vendome

If you are looking for a place with a variety of haunted places to visit, go to Prescott, AZ.  Prescott was the first and third territorial capital of the Arizona territory before Phoenix became its capital in 1889.  Prescott has held on to its history and can be seen in the restored Victorian homes and the courthouse in the center of town.

Room 16 of the Hotel Vendome is reportedly haunted by the ghost of Abby Byr and her cat, Noble.   In 1920, Abby and her husband - name unknown - had owned the hotel but had to sell out after falling on hard times.  The new owners allowed the couple and their cat to remain at the hotel - in Room 16.  Abby suffered from Tuberculosis and as her disease became much worse, she was less able to take care of herself.  In 1921, her husband left to get cigarettes or medicine and never returned.  Her illness and depression made her bedridden, unwilling to accept medicine or food.  In February of 1921, the 33 year old Abby died, with Noble soon after.

People staying in room 16 have seen, heard and smelled Abby.  Guests have reported seeing Abby's wispy reflection in the closet mirror while others claim to see her in full detail.  Guests have also reported moving quilts and smells of perfume and roses.

However, history does not support the existence of Abby but there is a history of others having lived in the hotel and on the land before the Hotel Vendome was erected.  Abby; therefor, is not the only apparition seen on the property as guests have reported seeing children and a man on the premises, as well as odd occurrences such as spinning DO NOT DISTURB SIGNS, and faucets, lights and fans turning on and off.

The Clawson House Inn

Bisbee, Arizona is another town in Arizona with numerous haunted locations.  Founded in 1880 as a copper, gold and silver mining town, Bisbee now has a population of just over 6,000 and a healthy population of ghosts as well.

The Clawson House Inn is own of many haunted spots and carries with it the mining history of the town. The inn was built in 1895 by Mr. Clawson, a mine manager used as a residence and later a boarding house for mine employees.  In the late 1890's, a labor dispute broke out at the Queen Mine southwest of town and the miners went on strike.  While the striking miners were arrested and moved out of town, replacement workers moved in and took over the vacant jobs.  Three of the workers found boarding and demise in the Clawson House Inn.  It is rumored that several of the striking miners came back to town and murdered three of the new workers within the walls of the house.  They are said to still haunt the inn today and they are not Casper!

Jerome Grand Hotel

Like Bisbee, Jerome, AZ was also a mining town.  Established in 1883, Jerome once had a population of over 15,000 people (now over 350) and housed the workers of the nearby United Verde Mine which produced over 1 billion dollars in copper, gold and silver until the 1950s.  During its heyday, Jerome was a hotbed of prostitution and gambling, giving it the label of "the wickedest town in the west" in 1903 by the New York Sun.

The Jerome Grand Hotel started as the United Verde Hospital in 1927 to treat sick and injured miners.  The many patients brought to this 30,000 square foot building died there either from mining injuries, during childbirth, from their mental illness or by accident.  One man was killed in 1935 when he was crushed beneath the hospital elevator.  When the mines dried up, the hospital was closed in 1950, sitting vacant for 44 years until it was purchased and remodeled as a hotel to accommodate the many visitors to one of Arizona's great tourist attractions.

The ghosts at the hotel manifest themselves through apparitions, sounds, and movement.  Before the hotel was purchased in 1994, lights were reported to turn on and off while there was no electricity to the building.  Passersby would hear screaming, moans and labored breathing.  Today, guests and employees of the hotel report to see the ghosts of a nurse and a patient.  They also report of evidence that the ghost of the man killed under the elevator roams the area, lights turning on and off in unoccupied rooms, the smell of cigars and the moans and screams of past patients.

This is just a few of the many haunted hotels you can find in Arizona.  But is you decide to stay in one, just remember, you may have a bed for the night, but don't expect to get much sleep!  Besides, it is probably just old Mr. Withers trying to scare you nosy kids.

Luau Party Games, Let Us Enter The World Of Fun And Entertainment

Luau Party Games are going to make your guests jump on their feet. Luau is a Hawaiian party and the word Luau means a lavish food extravaganza, which is given in the honor of celebrities. You can celebrate this event with your friends and family and can have a wonderful time with everyone. For this party, it is important that you add games to it so that everyone feels great and enjoy your party.

Mimic An Animal

Mimic An Animal, Luau Party Game, is going to be an awesome game, which will let everyone explore their talent, including both adults and kids. For this game, you have to write names of your guests and the commands you want them to perform in two different bowls. You need to ask a guest to come up and pick up pieces of paper from the two bowls with the name of the individual as well as the command. Then you can ask your guest to perform the command such as "Wiggle Like A Fish", "Walk Like A Crab", "Roar Like A Lion" etc. It would turn the air into laughter and fun. Everyone is definitely going to love this game.

Wearing Funny Gear

For this Luau Party Game, you need to have two sets of identical gear with you, which can include sunglasses, skirt, Hawaiian shirt, flip flops, snorkel fins, snorkel shovel, etc. You can have items equivalent to the number of individuals in each team. Now the rule is that the first member of each team would wear one item from the gear and would run to the finish line to hand over the gear to another member. Now that member is going to wear that and rush to the pile of the gear and wear another item and pass on the gear to the next member until the last member is going to be wearing all the gear, which would be awesome.

With your Luau Party Games, you are going to make your guests have a fun filled and a thrilling time. Wish you a Happy Luau Party.

How to Pack for Family Vacation

If you're a mother who underestimated the prep time involved in planning a family vacation the first go around and now you're nearly obsessive compulsive about it, you're not alone.

I boarded my first plane with a 1-year-old, no stroller, no pack-n-play and only five diapers. I didn't realize the time it takes to get a crying baby to sleep on a plane or the stress and pressure that follow from the eyes of the other passengers looking my direction in hopes that their stares would somehow soothe my baby.

I also didn't expect to run out of diapers while on the last leg of our trip, our daughter to have a major blowout and listen closely, planes do not carry diapers. I learned to be resourceful and made a diaper out of a blanket and a sanitary napkin, but by the end of it I nearly swore off family vacations that involved air travel.

Hawaii changed everything...

Then my husband received a call from his boss saying we would be traveling to Hawaii as a family for two weeks on the company as a thank you for driving through a blizzard to meet with clients. Of course while there, my husband will have to work, so I will be without transportation and I am 7 months pregnant, with a 2-year-old but it's Hawaii... right!

With a month to plan, I immediately made sure we would have a car seat and a pack-in-play in the rental car upon arrival. I will never travel again without a stroller, so I decided to bring a slim-line umbrella stroller to tow my 2-year-old around in the airport.

The 48-Hour Travel Time Principal

Traveling internationally taught me to pack enough in an overnight bag for 48-hours. It doesn't matter if your planned travel time is a few hours, plan for the worst when you have children. Any kind of storm, or mechanical malfunction can land a plane for 24 hours and it's up to us to pack enough snacks, toys, water and comfort items to get our kids through these times.

My plan of action started with a travel itinerary that includes both EST and the actual time in Hawaii. This is so I can try and keep as close to her schedule as possible on the way there and the way back. The itinerary also includes a day-by-day breakdown of what we'll do when we get to Honolulu including directions to local Costco.

Next, I planned very carefully my daughter's carry-on backpack. Each item in her bag had to be something that could hold her attention: DVD player with favorite movies, paper and crayons for coloring, favorite small books, 7 diapers and wipes, protein bars, dried fruit snacks and a 12oz empty water bottle to be filled once we make it through security.

My carry-on will include 2-3 outfits for each of us, as well as a toiletry bag, 7 more diapers and extra wipes, protein bars, fruit snacks, non-refrigerated milk boxes, water, blanket and stuffed animal.

Checked Baggage is for Toys

Toys are more important than clothes. We all want to look nice every day of our vacation, but wouldn't you rather have a happy and stimulated child who sleeps well at night, so you can have some time alone?

We are allowed to check one bag per passenger, so here's how I packed each one. Both my daughter's clothing and mine will be packed in one large suitcase. I packed light, non-wrinkling dresses and shirts, shorts, a pair of jeans, layering pieces like cardigans and lightweight throw-over sweaters plus a jacket for rainy weather and a few sets of pajamas for each of us. We do have access to a washer and dryer in our unit!

My husband's suitcase will be filled with his clothing, work related items, etc...

This is the most important lesson: The third suitcase will be filled with toys! From a kickboard to blowup rafts for the pool, snorkeling gear, puzzles, coloring books, DVDs, activity books, stuffed animals. Whatever fits goes basically and she gets to help pack this suitcase.

Attire on the Plane

We've all been in the airport as a beautiful mother with three children walks by in a flowing dress and heels. We all want to be her right? I tried this on my last vacation. I wore a bohemian printed maxi dress and cardigan to the airport for my 5-hour trip that turned into a 12-hour trip. Though it was comfortable on the plane, it was not comfortable walking for miles through the airport corridors. But my wakeup call happened when I stepped off the plane and the temperature was in the 40s with a dress and sandals on - NEVER AGAIN!

Now in the back of my mind I humorously think that well-dressed mom walking through the airport is trying this out for the first time and if everything goes off without a hitch she may try it again, but the moment she gets stuck in airports all day, she'll go back to her most comfortable pair of jeans, tennis shoes and t-shirt.

Hawaii's Oldest Island: Kauai

One of the Hawaiian Islands, Kauai, is sometimes referred to as "Hawaii's Island Of Discovery". That's because Kauai is Hawaii's oldest island, yet it's constantly changing to enlighten and satisfy all the many visitors who go there.

One can find shops and restaurants bustling with activity alongside the many vendors working the highways and by-ways to sell flowers, a variety of fish and lots of fruit.

On Kauai's west side on the beach on Kekaha, an old sugar camp house sat for years awaiting restoration. Finally, this facility along with an historic 5-bedroom house, has now joined Waimea Plantation Cottages as a restored plantation- style home bringing the cottage count now to 50.

Heading east to Kalaheo, two houses have been added as rentals for vacationers. Although both sites are away from any beaches (and are more residential than resort-style), the accommodations are affordable, clean and comfortable. Plus, guests do not need to be concerned with minimum stays or cleaning fees.

Vacationers here can even enjoy more perks like a hot tub, free tennis court usage, beach gear, boogie boards and snorkel equipment.

On the south side, reconstruction of a hotel (Waiohai Hotel), damaged by Hurricane Iniki in 1992, has been completed. This property was converted into timeshares---200 2-bedroom accommodations in nine buildings.

Catering to the upscale market, 22 units in the Poipu Kai Resort were added measuring 1,700 to 2,000 square feet. These condos have air conditioning, featuring walk-in showers made of glass block, complete with designer furnishings. Oh and for kitchen lovers, there's Corian countertops throughout. Visitors here will agree this place is a pleasant, nicely-manicured resort, complete with pool and ocean-front units.

Also in the Poipu area, roughly a block from the ocean, is a quiet setting with restored former residential rentals featuring hardwood floors, hot tubs and walk-in showers. Here one finds a feeling of seclusion in this lovely place called Hideaway Love Villas.

For those visitors wishing to be pampered while staying at Poipu, there is another setting of three 2,600 square-foot units: two at ocean front; one with an ocean view. Here, at Kauai Cottages at Poipu Beach, a guest gets elegant furnishings, high-speed Internet access---complimented with tennis and honeymoon packages. The honeymoon packages come with a cold bottle of champagne upon arrival PLUS a chef will even prepare a delicious meal! So, be assured to find a lot of romance when staying in these private, beautifully- landscaped cottages.

As the continual proliferation of vacation rentals marches on, the south side of Kauai will doubtless feel some growing pains. More commercial development will need to keep pace---town squares, shops, restaurants and grocery stores will blanket the landscape.

Approaching Lihue, one finds what used to be one of the "off limits" in Kauai---until a 3,000 acre ranch owner opened his property to small tours. This was a former sugar plantation now managed by Kipu Ranch Adventures. Here, a visitor can enjoy the land as it sprawls from hilly terrain to coastal beaches. These beaches offer common sites of turtles, seals and yes, even dolphins!

Should visitors have a passion for Polynesian dancing, attending a three-day Kauai Polynesian Festival event is an absolute treat. Located at the Kukui Grove Park and Pavilion on Highway 50, guests are entertained by local Hula troupes, dancers from Somoa, Tahiti and as far away as New Zealand. The festival usually held in late May, boasts international craft displays, intereresting booths and an abundance of local cuisine.

While in Lihue, check out the fascinating yet unusual museum known as the Kauai Veterans' Center Military Museum. Here, the die-hard war-buff can view displays of weaponry donated by local soldiers of Hawaii who fought in World War II and in Vietnam. There are even archives from combat units dating back to the Spanish American War.

Making your way on Kauai's east side north of Lihue, visitors discover the little community of Kapaa. Here you find the Kauai Children's Discovery Museum specializing in the developmental needs of kids under five years in age. Parents are welcome to gather information about community resources and services as well as on child development. One will be very impressed with the numerous special toys and playground equipment---all designed for the stimulation of kids' brains and muscles.

As you leave Kapaa and continue northward on Highway 56, prepare yourself for all the congestion due to a construction boom. Surprisingly, an oasis appears revealing the Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens and Sculpture Park. Guests are permitted to tour the grounds where gardens feature exotic vegetation, hardwood trees, even dozens of statues made of bronze. Two of the most recently added statues depict a young Hawaiian with his father planting a mahogany tree; and the other was installed adjacent to the ponds along the garden's birdwalk, called "Still Life" which is a likeness of a blue heron.

For the hiking enthusiasts, Princeville Ranch has a fantastic hiking tour lasting five hours over ranch land hosting some awe-inspiring viewpoints. This tour even features an exciting area where you must swing on a chain to advance off a small cliff. At the end of the hiking is Kalihwai Falls, providing the visitor/hiker with a refreshing dip and a fulfilling lunch.

There is a place on Kauai debated to be the most remote place on the island: Hanalei Colony Resort. There are no phones and no televisions. Renovations are underway upgrading these condos from one bath to one and a half baths. Workers minimize their building efforts, however, to focus on the most important detail: Don't Disrupt the Quiet-Seeking Patrons! As remote and quiet as this resort remains, wedding, honeymoon and small meeting groups are always welcome.

Yes, Kauai is continually offering its visitors something pristine and glorious. It's an adventure into Paradise not soon forgotten.

Second Honeymoon - Don't Wait Till You Need One

Hey, remember that honeymoon you and your new spouse took oh so many years ago? Wasn't it wonderful? The romance? The walks on the beach? The kisses under the moonlight?

Now, if you're thinking, "yeah, those were the days," then you and your beloved are due for a second honeymoon. That's right, a second honeymoon. Who said romance and spontaneity has to go away just because you've been married for awhile. Newlyweds don't corner the market on romance, you know.

So, now that you're warm to the idea of a second honeymoon, it's time to pick a place. Let's see, where shall it be? Now, if you're steering towards packing up the kids and taking off to the Grand Canyon, stop right there. This is not a family vacation. It's a second honeymoon, and one unofficial rule of a second honeymoon is NO KIDS! Not that there's anything wrong with kids. And yours are probably cute and adorable, especially in their little footie pajamas. But, cute, adorable and footie pajamas don't belong on a honeymoon. They belong back home with grandma and grandpa.

One spot you might consider for your second honeymoon is probably one you and the family wouldn't consider for your family vacation, which makes it even more perfect for your honeymoon. May I suggest St. Thomas, one of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Well, of course, being an island, St. Thomas can't help but be a romantic place to stay for your second honeymoon. And, if you want to be pampered, you might consider staying at one of the fine Spa Resorts on St. Thomas. Below are a couple of Resort Spas of note:

The Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa

340-777-7100

The award-winning Wyndham is one of St. Thomas' most popular all-inclusive resort spas. What does all-inclusive mean? It means that many amenities are included in one package, which usually helps cut down on costs. Amenities like:

*All Meals and Snacks

*All Beverages - including premium liquor and house wine

*All activities, recreation, entertainment and non-motorized watersports, which includes tennis, basketball, beach volleyball, windsurfing, kayaks and snorkeling.

*Access to the Fitness Center

*Taxes and Gratuities - that's right, no tipping required.

There is an additional Spa Package for those who wish to avail themselves of the spa facilities.

The Ritz-Carlton, St. Thomas

340-775-3333

Another great resort on St. Thomas is the Ritz-Carlton, undergoing a $40 million renovation and enhancement project, to be completed in December 2006. The Ritz-Carlton is located on a 30-acre estate overlooks the water and white-sand beaches of the eastern tip of St. Thomas.

Those going on second honeymoons might be interested in their "Reconnect Package" which includes ocean front accommodations, daily breakfast for two, and one half-day Lady Lynsey sail for two guests per stay.

No matter where you stay on St. Thomas, do venture out and explore the wonderful beaches that St. Thomas has to offer. While your resort probably has its own private beach, you should take the opportunity and explore all the other public beaches as well.

Coki Point

A small, yet popular beach with calm waters. Coki Point is great for boat, jet skiing, scuba diving and snorkeling, with onsite beach rentals of equipment.

Magens Bay

A very popular beach, often thought of as the best beach in all of St. Thomas. You have to pay for its popularity, however. There is a small entry fee. Another place for sailing, snorkeling and kayaking.

Secret Harbor

Interested in diving? Then head out to Secret Harbor, which is considered ideal for diving. An onsite dive rental shop can assist you with equipment.

Lindquist Beach

An undeveloped beach with no equipment rental or food stands. If you want to get away from the commercial beaches, this is the place.

Wherever you stay, or beaches you visit, take time to relax and rediscover one another. Who knows, maybe you'll decide to renew your vows at the same time. Does that mean you then will go on a third honeymoon? Hm, well, there's an idea.
